ABOUT ADD WATERMARK.
Watermarking a PDF — stamping "CONFIDENTIAL," "DRAFT," a company name, or a logo diagonally across every page — is a standard way to mark a document's status or ownership before it's shared beyond a tight circle. minipdftoosz's Add Watermark tool overlays either text or an image watermark across every page of your PDF, with control over opacity, position, and rotation angle, using pdf-lib to draw the watermark content directly into each page's content stream.
Because the watermark is drawn as real vector content into the page rather than a rasterized overlay, it stays crisp at any zoom level and prints cleanly — a text watermark remains actual selectable/searchable text in the resulting document (layered semi-transparently over the existing page content), and an image watermark keeps whatever quality the source image had. Opacity control matters a great deal here: a watermark needs to be visible enough to serve its purpose without making the underlying document illegible, and the default settings aim for that balance.
Text watermarks are the more common choice for status marking ("DRAFT," "CONFIDENTIAL," "COPY — DO NOT DISTRIBUTE"), typically set at a diagonal angle across the page so they're immediately noticeable without needing to obscure any particular section of content. Image watermarks are the usual choice for branding — a company logo, faintly repeated, asserting ownership or origin on every page of a document that might get forwarded, printed, or photocopied beyond its original recipient.
Watermarking applies uniformly to every page by design, since the whole point is a consistent, unmissable mark across the entire document rather than something easy to overlook on any single page. If you only need a mark on specific pages rather than the whole document, consider Add Text or Add Images instead, which target individual pages rather than watermarking the entire file at once.
If you need different watermark text on different subsets of pages within the same document — say, "DRAFT" on early chapters and "FINAL" on later ones — that requires two separate passes: split the document by those page ranges first, watermark each piece with its own text, then merge the results back together into one file.
Businesses marking draft documents before internal review, or protecting shared materials with a visible ownership stamp, are the primary audience for Add Watermark — anywhere a document's status or origin needs to be immediately, unmissably obvious to anyone who opens it, printed or on-screen.
- Lower opacity keeps underlying content fully legible; higher opacity makes the watermark itself unmissable at a glance.
- Diagonal rotation (the classic "DRAFT" angle) is generally more effective at deterring casual screenshot cropping than a flat horizontal watermark.
- For a mark on only specific pages rather than the whole document, use Add Text or Add Images instead.
