Splitting a PDF is the mirror image of merging: instead of combining files, you're carving one large document into smaller, more useful pieces. minipdftoosz's Split tool offers two ways to do this — split into individual single-page PDFs (useful when every page needs to become its own file), or split by custom page ranges you define yourself, like "1-3, 4-10, 11-20" to produce three separate documents from one source.
Under the hood, pdf-lib parses the source document's page tree and creates new, independent PDF objects for each output range, copying only the relevant pages rather than the whole file. Because every output file is a genuinely separate PDF (not a reference back to the original), each one opens, prints, and shares independently — there's no hidden dependency on the source document sticking around.
The most common reason people reach for a splitter is extracting a specific chapter, invoice, or exhibit from a much larger bundled document — a 200-page annual report where you only need pages 45-52 for a meeting, or a scanned batch of ten separate receipts that arrived as one 10-page PDF from a scanner app and need to become ten individual files for an expense system.
Because the output is frequently more than one file, results are automatically bundled into a single .zip archive (built client-side with JSZip) so you get one download instead of juggling a dozen separate save dialogs. The zip is generated in memory and never touches a server — it's assembled the same way a desktop zip utility would, just running inside the tab instead of the OS.
Because each output file is fully independent, split results are also a convenient way to distribute a shared workload: hand pages 1-50 of a large review document to one colleague and pages 51-100 to another, without either of them needing the full original. The zip bundling means you only manage one download link when sharing a batch of split output with someone else, even though it may contain a dozen separate files inside.
Legal assistants, bookkeepers, and anyone handling scanned paperwork in bulk are the most frequent users of Split — breaking a year-end scan of receipts into individual files for an expense system, or dividing a lengthy contract into its component sections for separate review by different people. It's equally useful for a one-time need, like pulling a single chapter out of an e-book PDF to read on a smaller device.
- Range syntax accepts commas and hyphens together: "1-2,5,9-12" produces three output files, not four.
