ABOUT CROP PAGES.
Excess white space around a page's actual content — oversized margins from a scan, a PDF exported at a larger page size than its content needs, or simply wasted space you'd rather reclaim — is exactly what Crop Pages is built to trim. minipdftoosz's tool lets you define a crop region (visually or by margin amount) and applies it across pages, adjusting each page's visible boundary via pdf-lib without touching the actual content drawn on the page.
Technically, PDF cropping works by adjusting the page's crop box — a boundary that determines what portion of the page's content is visible and printed — rather than physically deleting or moving anything on the page itself. This means cropping is fully non-destructive to the underlying content: if you crop too aggressively and need to undo it, the original uncropped content is still there in your original file; you'd simply re-upload the source and try a different crop region rather than trying to "un-crop" an already-cropped output.
A common trigger is a scanned document where the scanner captured more of the page (or the surrounding scanner bed) than the actual document content occupies — trimming that excess makes the document look intentionally designed rather than carelessly scanned, and reduces wasted white space when printing multiple pages per sheet. Another frequent case is a PDF exported from a design tool at a page size larger than the actual artwork, where cropping tightens the page boundary to match the real content.
Cropping applies uniformly to the page(s) you select, so a document with genuinely different margin issues on different pages may need to be split into groups and cropped separately, or cropped conservatively enough to work across the whole set — a modest crop applied everywhere is generally safer than an aggressive crop that risks clipping content on pages with slightly different margins.
If you're not sure exactly how much margin to trim, a slightly conservative first pass — checked in PDF Viewer before finalizing — followed by a second, more aggressive crop if the first result still has room to spare, is generally safer than guessing an aggressive value up front and risking clipped content you'd need to start over to fix.
People cleaning up scanned documents with excess white space, or tightening a PDF exported at an oversized page for its actual content, are the main audience for Crop Pages — a quick, non-destructive fix for wasted margin.
- When margins vary noticeably across pages, crop conservatively enough to avoid clipping content on the pages with the smallest margins.
- Cropping changes what's visible, not the underlying content — if you crop too much, re-upload the original and try again rather than trying to reverse the crop.
- Combine with Resize Pages if you also need the final page dimensions to match a specific standard size after cropping.
